  1. I remember the band very well. I was a club DJ throughout the seventies and in 1976 worked at Eve’s Night Spot, Bromsgrove. The club was owned by Brian Thompson who knew just about everybody in the musc business at that time. I was lucky enough to be resident DJ at the time when Muscles were booked to play at the club. I still have the promotional photo and the two singles “If It Relaxes Your Mind” and “i’m A Girl Watcher” which the band gave me at that time. Muscles were very popular and I (along with many others) could never understand why the band never made the real big time. They were fabulous live, one of the only bands that sounded as good live as on record. I played ‘Muscles’ music through the mid-late seventies and into the eighties. when I was resedent at other clubs including The Cofton Country Club (I was the last DJ to play there) and Reddies in Redditch. They will remain one of those bands that unfortunately slipped through the net, and very unfairly so.

“could never understand why the band never made the real big time.”

They were on the verge of doing just that when a HUGE event in music happened. Muscles were booked to appear on Top of the Pops to perform “If It Relaxes Your Mind” on the 18th August 1977. As I’m sure you know, TotP was THE big show to be on back then and pretty much guaranteed a major hit. But some singer by the name of Elvis Presley died two days before and everything in music changed. The TotP appearance was cancelled as Elvis’ death took over any and everything connected to music.

Muscles just never got that big break because Elvis died.

  3. The guy on the left of the photo at the top of this entry entitled Make Me Happy is Andy Abbot who is not mentioned in the text.

  4. I roadied for the band in 77/78 when Mel Gaynor was their drummer.

Great memories of a great band.

I believe Geoff went on to launch computer game distributor US Gold.

I understand that Richard Ford (also ex Cissy Stone Band) migrated to South Africa.

    No news on Stuart unfortunately.

Mel did quite well … recording and touring with Simple Minds.
