Matthew Edwards and I formed Dance in 1979. Martin Recci joined on bass, and Nigel Collis on drums. I played guitar, and Matthew provided vocals. Our first live appearance was in a side room at Digbeth Civic Hall, supporting The Subterranean Hawks, with Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy on vocals for the Hawks. Demo tapes were recorded at Bob Lamb’s home studio. Tina Adams added synth to the mix, and Mark Young came in to add a second guitar. Dance then went on to play in the local pubs and clubs supporting bands such as The Au Pairs, The Dangerous Girls, and The Pinkies. Dance then went on the headlining gigs, and played venues such as The Golden Eagle, The Fighting Cocks, and The Cedar Club. At this time dance rehearsed at the casino in the Rum Runner night club., with Duran Duran rehearsing upstairs. Dance then got some dates supporting UB40 on their first UK tour. The last night of the tour was at the Birmingham Odeon, Dance were first on the bill, with Musical Youth next on the bill. Martin Recci left the band to join Fashion, and Simon Colley, an original member of Duran Duran joined the band. Eventually Dance split up, with Mathew, Mark and Simon forming Somerville.
