  1. Sadly did not see The Who gig at the Mayfair but did manage to attend Mountain,Hawkwind,ELP and Black Sabbath among others. These would all have been ’70-’73

  2. I can’t go into TKMaxx without thinking of my first gig, nervously edging my way around in my new drainpipe jeans (with turnups), red DM’s (from Nelson House), & probably a black cap sleeved T shirt, waiting to see Buzzcocks.
This was my first of may encounters with Spizz..always the support in Brum for the new bands. Thinking I looked pretty punky…but still having to get home earlyish for school the next day on the no16 night service, what a gig, what a night.
I grew up that night, but me Mum still dropped me off at the door!

    1. Hey, that’s me you’re talking about, capped sleeved t-shirt and all! Only difference being getting a free ciggy off Pete Shelley after the gig. Great night.. Also caught The Doomed there and The Motors in 1978.

  3. Not many to list…wasn’t there a fire & it then closed down?

    Sham 69/Coventry Automatics 1978
Buzzcocks/The Prefects. The Mayfair, Birmingham 26/5/78
    Siouxsie & The Banshees/Spizz Oil/Human League. Mayfair, Birmingham 23/10/78

  4. This venue was strangely completely off my radar in my big concert going era when I was a student in the late 70s. I saw The Stranglers there on 20/10/77, supported by Steel Pulse. The whole experience was a really charged event. We tried to get tickets at the box office but it had sold out. Luckily one off the bouncers had stolen a load of tickets so we bought them off him. The audience was really ugly. There was an air of impending violence. i think one of those punk poets was first up, to be greated by a tsunami of gobbing. Then Steel Pulse. Someone threw a glass at them half way through and the nit was game over for the Pulse. Don’t remember much about the Stranglers themselves, but I guess they were really good.

  5. I can remember going to a few all-nighters there. Sabbath in the very early days, Mountain, The Who, Alice Cooper, Osibisa (?) . Staggering out into the cold Birmingham mornings and taking a Corporation bus back home.

  6. I remember The Who there. The group walked through the audience to reach the stage – uproar all the way.

  7. Saw Siouxsie & The Banshees here shortly after the release of Hong Kong Garden. They were supported by Human League (before the days of the two girls) and Spizz.

  8. Saw Rod and the Faces there on a Sunday night in 1970 (I think). Rod had a silver lured suit on and was more than a little pissed! Great night, but I can’t recall the exact date and would live to know – my first Rod Stewart gig and am now well into double figures!

  9. Saw hawk wind, Uriah heel, Stephanewolf, and canned heat at the Mayfair suite, sat talking to big bob hite at the end of canned heat gig exchanging smokes and drinks amazing band. Saw them at mothers, and the odeon.

  10. I went to the Mayfair a few times in the 1970s. Standout gigs include:

    Generation X with The Killjoys – 20/03/1978
Buzzcocks with The Prefects – 26/05/1978
Siouxsie & the Banshees with Spizz Oil & the Human League – 23/10/1978
Penetration with Punishment of Luxury and Neon – 02/12/1978
