I lived opposite the Poolway on the Meadway whilst growing up. Bought many records from that shop first being Queens Bohemian Rhapsody and bought my first ever Sex Pistols single there (God Save The Queen). I seem to remember it closed in the mid 70’s and became a Fishing Tackle shop of all things, aaarrrggghhhh!
We moved to the Poolway in about 1974, and I am pretty sure I remember the shop opening, shortly afterwards, in about 1975, something like that… I can definitely remember buying Blondie,Jam, Squeeze, Police, Buzzcocks there; I was a regular in late 70s,- early 80s (I was born in 1969) After 1980, I started investigating older acts, and bought some Beatles/Stones/Dylan there…
the shop was still there in the 80s, well into the mid-80s…I have a vague memory of my brother buying MJ and Madonna records there… By then, I was old enough to get the bus to town, for my records, so I didn’t really notice the local shop closing…
I remember that my schoolmate used to get the leftover promo posters from the shop.So i would go to his house and see a Blondie Promo poster, and he’d tell me the guy in the shop just gave it to him.. I was very impressed..
the shop I am talking about was right next to the big Co-op..If you enter Poolway from the Meadway side, it would be on the left side,… Am I talking about a different shop?
My cousin Trevor owned Poolway Records. The story of him giving away the poster was about right for Trevor, as he is a kind and generous man.
