I always remember coming in to town on a Saturday as a kid and going ot look through the window of this store. There used to be a huge analogue mixing desk in the window with a price tag on it that said. Will swap for a house….
As a kid me and my mates would catch the bus from Kingsnorton into the city centre just to walk around the town to the music shops to play the guitars.Woodroffes(John Bright Street was my favourite.Down in the basement were the cheaper guitars -Watkins Rapiers,Burns,Hofners,Futuramas,Kays etc.On the ground floor individually placed in glass cases were Fenders,Gibsons,Gretch they looked magnificent needless to say you couldn’t just pick one up and play it.as a kid you could only dream.
I bought a Gibson es 345 from there in 1966. I eventually contacted the original owner and we are still in touch! Had I have known then what I know now I would have bought the 1950 something blonde version but it was too expensive and the sunburst was all the rage. The brochure showed it as ‘brunette’ priced new in 1966 at 205 guineas.
Back in the 70’s woodroffes had 21 Yamaha
SA2000S blond guitars made to celebrate the
shops 21st anniversary. Has anyone got one
of these guitars, or knows the history. Pete Oliver
had one so did Rodger Hill/spitfire also

1956 bought my first guitar at Woodroffes £16 paid for it weekly on the knock.
A second hand pre Gibson Epiphone violin style put a pick up on it played in pubs with a bloke on the piano Marston green Tavern, Pelham arms, and SHARE Holders Arms.
Bought all my first keyboards here – Hohner Pianet, Moog Prodigy, Korg Polysix. As a young kid, first spending Xmas-&-Birthday money, then bank loans enabled by my first job, Woodroofe’s was always a bit daunting. Used to rehearse at Diamond Studios nextdoor, and go to Soul gigs at The Hummingbird opposite
